Resistor Color Code
Read a 4-band resistor from its color bands.

How it works
The formula behind this calculator.
R = (10·d1 + d2 + d3) × 10^multiplier (5-band adds a 3rd digit)
- d1, d2, d3
- Digit bands (color)
- multiplier
- Power of 10 (color)
- tolerance
- ± % (color)
Each color is a digit (0–9). Read left to right. The last band is tolerance; the second-to-last is the multiplier.
Example: Brown-Black-Red-Gold = 1·0 × 10² ± 5% = 1,000 Ω ± 5%
Ref: IEC 60062 (Marking codes for resistors and capacitors)
Tips
- 💡 5-band resistors add a precision digit. The first 3 bands are digits, then multiplier, then tolerance.
- 💡 Gold = ±5%, silver = ±10%, brown = ±1%, red = ±2%, green = ±0.5%, blue = ±0.25%, violet = ±0.1%.
