How it works
The formula behind this calculator.
markup = (revenue − cost) / cost × 100
- cost
- What you paid
- revenue
- Selling price
Markup is profit as a share of the cost. Restaurants use 200–400% markup to cover labor and overhead.
Example: Cost $40, sold at $100 → markup = 150%
Ref: Retail accounting
Tips
- 💡 Markup and margin are different. $10 cost with 100% markup = $20 retail, but the margin is 50%.
- 💡 Restaurants typically use 300% markup (a.k.a. 25% food cost) to cover labor and overhead.
